Pride is often seen as a subtle companion to success and good deeds, but even pride in doing good can lead us astray. Even the most virtuous acts lose their purity when tainted by pride. The Bhagavad Gita emphasizes the practice of Nishkam Karma—performing actions selflessly, without attachment to the results, as the highest form of spiritual discipline.
“Pride of Good is the Root of Evil.”
When Pride Creeps into Goodness
Good deeds are meant to purify the heart and uplift the soul. They align us with divine purpose and bring harmony to the world. However, when pride accompanies our actions, it creates a barrier between us and true spiritual growth. Pride turns selfless acts into a means of self-glorification, feeding the ego rather than the spirit.
For example, a person who helps others but constantly seeks praise and recognition is not serving with purity. Instead, their actions become a transaction aimed at boosting their own image. This false sense of superiority is what the Gita warns against, as it binds us to the material world and distances us from divine consciousness.
“He who performs his duty without attachment and dedicates the results to the Divine remains free from all bondage.”
– Bhagavad Gita 5.10
How to Overcome Pride and Serve with Purity
- Practice Humility: Acknowledge that all your talents, resources, and opportunities come from the Divine. Let gratitude replace pride.
- Reflect on Your Intentions: Before performing any action, ask yourself, “Am I doing this for self-glory or for the greater good?”
- Dedicate Actions to the Divine: Offer the results of your actions to a higher power, as a form of surrender and devotion.
- Embrace Nishkam Karma: Perform duties without attachment to the outcome, focusing solely on the act of giving.
- Celebrate Others: Instead of seeking recognition for yourself, uplift and appreciate the efforts of others.
“True greatness lies in humility and selfless service, not in the pursuit of recognition.”
The teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and Swami Ramsukhdas Ji urge us to go beyond pride and embrace selflessness. When we act with humility, reflect on our intentions, and dedicate our efforts to a higher purpose, we free ourselves from the chains of ego. In doing so, our actions become pure, our hearts are lightened, and we walk closer to the path of spiritual liberation.
